Relaxed treatment with nitrous oxide
If you feel the same way, we have good news: with nitrous oxide, we offer you a modern and effective method of relaxing during treatment. Nitrous oxide helps you to lose your fears and reduce your perception of pain and time. Any gag reflex that may be present is also greatly reduced.
How does nitrous oxide work?
You breathe in a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide through a small nasal mask. The dosage, which is specially tailored to you, creates a state of relaxation and, unlike anesthesia, you are fully responsive at all times and can communicate with your dentist. Patients describe a pleasant feeling of warmth, a slight numbness of the tongue or mucous membranes as well as a feeling of euphoria and lightness or a pleasant heaviness.
As nitrous oxide is not metabolized, the effect subsides within a few seconds after the nitrous oxide has been administered, and you can leave the practice after the dental treatment without an accompanying person. Laughing gas treatments are successfully carried out millions of times worldwide without complications. In the USA and Canada in particular, dental treatments for children using laughing gas are standard.
Nitrous oxide can also be combined very well with hypnosis, as it increases suggestibility and makes it easier to drift off into a trance. Combined with laser treatment, it is also possible to have almost painless and contactless “drilling” without rumbling and unpleasant noises.
What is nitrous oxide?
Known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a non-allergenic, non-irritating gas that has a calming effect on the central nervous system. Thanks to modern medical technology, the use of nitrous oxide is considered very safe. Nitrous oxide is one of the most frequently investigated pharmaceuticals and one of the most controllable sedatives. Its analgesic and sedative effects were discovered back in the 19th century and have been used millions of times without complications to date.
N.B. Jörgensen documented over 4 million nitrous oxide applications without serious incidents (Jörgensen, N.B., Sedation, local and general anesthesia in dentistry. 2nd ed. Philadelphia: Lea & Febiger, 1985). With modern technology and trained staff, this proven procedure is used in our practice.
