What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis, also known as periodontal disease, is an inflammation of the periodontium caused by bacteria. Periodontitis occurs when an inflammation of the gums remains untreated for a long time and the inflammation spreads to the periodontium. The inflammation of the periodontium can be treated, but the destruction of the periodontium is generally irreversible. The type and severity of the course of the disease depend on several factors. The effects on the organism as a whole should also not be neglected, including an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and premature births.

Signs and consequences of periodontitis

Periodontal diseases are insidious, as they are generally painless. However, the following signs may indicate a disease of the periodontium:

  • Bleeding gums and receding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Red, swollen or sensitive gums
  • Loosening of the teeth
  • Discharge of secretions or pus from gum pockets
  • Change in the fit of partial dentures
  • The teeth no longer fit together properly when biting together

Even if an inflammation of the periodontium is treatable and we use the most modern methods such as a dental laser, the top priority is to prevent the development of periodontitis or to recognize and treat it at a very early stage, as untreated periodontitis leads to tooth loss.

Prevention and treatment

As a preventive measure, thorough daily oral hygiene with interdental care, regular check-ups at the dentist in conjunction with professional teeth cleaning at least twice a year and the reduction of risk factors are important:

  • Quit or reduce smoking
  • Correctly adjust diabetes medication

The treatment of periodontitis is very complex and is individually tailored to each patient. We would be happy to advise you in more detail in our periodontitis consultation!
