Causes and consequences of snoring
Snoring is caused by the fluttering and swinging of muscles and soft tissue in the constricted throat. During sleep, the muscles relax and the lower jaw falls back with the tongue, narrowing the airway. Low tissue tension and obesity exacerbate this problem, which increases considerably with age. Those affected often do not even notice their snoring, but suffer the consequences such as dry mouth, hoarseness and a sore throat. Partners are usually more affected, as their sleep is disturbed by the snoring noises.
Treatment options
Disturbing snoring without apnoea can be treated with a gentle and painless palatal lift using laser treatment or with dental splints, similar to braces or a sports mouthguard. In the case of loud snoring with breathing interruptions, known as sleep apnoea, treatment with splints is essential to avoid negative health consequences. We will be happy to advise you on this in our consultation hours.
